Prefered Recording Equip?
What is your prefered equipment for direct to board recording? Rack equip, etc? Anyone getting a decent tube tone into the board via rack gear?
Thanks
Dennis

I've had pretty good luck with a Demeter Tube Bass pre and other times with an Evans pre. After that it depends on what kind of music it is. If it's traditional, and they want to use their reverb, then that's it. If I provide the reverb, I have a Demeter Real Reverb or a M-5000 in the rack. If I need delay and/or FX, I have the M-5000 and I can cascade through the engines and I have an Eventide H-3000 Ultra Harmonizer. If for some reason it needs more, I can cascade through several Eventides or they've just plain got the wrong guy, which has happened more than once.

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of my Digitech 2112 SGS. With the choice of a tube or solid state preamp (or both together) and most any effect a steel player would need, I like it a lot. I agree that a tube preamp far outshines a solid state one for direct recording. I've tried a couple of the boutique tube pre's and they're all good, but not enough better to justify the cost for me -- BUT I don't spend that much time in the studios these days.

I have 4 main choices at present.
An Avalon U5 direct box, ostensibly a Bass box, but it has several built in Eq settings or flat. Not Tubes but a great sounding DI.
A Presonus Bluetube I usually use for a stereo synth, but has many other uses and I use for slide ocasionally.
And a Presonus Digimax with 8 channels and limiters on each, which for a non tube preamp I am quite happy with.
Finally an Aphex 1100 Thermioncs tube preamp digital converter, with either a Fishman DI or a passive DI before it. This is my workhorse pre amp. This preamp makes everything sound great into the Protools. I wish I had 4 of them. I have a few other preamps, but the Aphex is #1 for me.
I do like the Demeter stuff and wish I had some here. As well as Manley & Tubetech.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 22 March 2003 at 12:23 AM.]
