Behringer amps, Fender guitars

Post by Tony Harris »

Was in a music store trying out a Behringer AC112 60 watt combo yesterday. Don't know about steel, but sounded very good with guitar. LOW price, for a tough little amp with a 12" speaker, pre-amp tube, built-in FX, foot switch etc. Of course it has its limitations, and I don't know how it would do on a gig, but I was amazed at what good value it seemed, especially for the younger player. But in the store I was using a Fender Strat. It looked good and had the unmistakeable Strat sound. But the set-up was terrible - really high action, and if you even LOOKED at the trem, it went way out of tune because of sticky nut problems. Now as an experienced player, I know these things can be put right, but to a youngster buying an expensive 'name' guitar - this could really put him off. Wouldn't Fender do themselves a favour by making their guitars on the wall more PLAYABLE?

I worked in a music store for quite a few years, and I seldom saw a guitar come from a manufacturer (Gibson, Fender, ...) in really good playing shape out of the case. This was from around mid 70's through the 80's. I hate to say it, but Fenders were probably the worst during that time, for whatever reason. Gibson's tended to be a little better, and the imports were all over, you never knew how they would show up.

We usually tried to do at least a basic setup on every instrument we receieved, and we found that ALL price range guitars sold better with at least a minimal setup and fresh strings.. duh!

I guess it's too expensive to have a real setup guy as part of final QA? Maybe they're counting on the dealers to do that?
