Musicman 112RP modification?

I have a Musicman 100W guitar amp with a 12" speaker, Reverb and phase.
This amp adds a lot of coloration to the sound and often sounds too "midrangey".

I have tried a lot of settings. Sometimes, when i find a nice setting, it sounds completely different the next day.

The flat settings on my hi-fi monitors seems to sound better.

How can I bypass the tone controls with a switch. Is a circuit diagram available?

Or alternatively, has anyone found the optimum (flat) settings for PSG on a Musicman?

Hope you can help.

Try a JBL speaker!
For trying, connect the speaker out first with another speakercabinet, and listen if it's better that way. Also, try a small EQ between volumepedal and amp...

Johan's right...a small stomp-box graphic EQ would work wonders. Barring that, does the amp have a midrange control? If it does, set it very low, or completely off. Now turn the bass all the way up, and then adjust the tone with the treble control.

If it doesn't have a midrange knob, and you don't want to bother with an EQ, then trade the amp for one that does!

I can't stress enough...the value of a midrange control. It's a "must have" on any steel amp.

Donny, yes this amp has a bass,mid, and treble control. Plus separate Deep and Bright switches. So it has a full range of sounds, but it never sounds right to me, even when someone else plays the PSG on it. It is always too bright or too muffled. Midrange boosted often sounds too nasal.

Johan, I have tried many,many, many boxes. I even added resistor/capacitor circuits to them which helped a lot but were never perfect. There always seems to be a "hole" somewhere in the spectrum.
The only suggestion I have not tried is connecting to a JBL speaker. That might be a solution. The speaker in the amp is an ElectroVoice 12 inch.

So I have to find a JBL box somewhere.
By the way: all my guitars sound great on this amp.

If the JBL works for you, I've got one for sale up in the ads. Just curious have you tried new power tubes? That can really brighten it up if they are old. I am just now sure if the jbl will sound much better or different than the EV speaker, I have never used the EV speakers in an amp. Other things that might help is to use a cheap piezo horn/tweet from Radio Shack. Bill Lawrence uses one on his Super Reverb that I saw at Scotty's a couple of years ago. It really adds a lot for a low price. A piezo is a super high Z and does not require a crossover, just parallel it ti the speaker. I would love to sell you a JBL, but I don't think that would be your answer, however I have been wrong a lot lately!.

Peter, I have a Musicman 1-10 50 watt what that sounded good with a Strat or Telle but never sounded good with my Less Paul until I put a new set of Ruby matched power tubes in it. It sounded mushy but the tubes made the difference. It still don't have it for steel.
