Original Fender Bandmaster

Post by Jim Bob Sedgwick »

I guess I'm getting old, but I was just thinking of the first professional amplifier I ever owned. This amp had the 3 ten inch speaker configuration. What would the ohms be? I assume Fender was using 8 ohm speakers at that time. And why did Fender discontinue the amp. I know it didn't have a tremendous amount of power, but it had a great tone. Does anyone remember? Thnx

Jim Bob:
You don't remember what happened to your Bandmaster, do you?! I can't tell you about ohms on the speakers, etc., but people have not forgotten the 3x10" Bandmaster - why was it dis-continued by Fender? Fender (the company, not Leo) created, and subsequently ruined a lot of great amps and guitars. A lot of people own and love the later piggy-back Bandmasters, but the convenience of the combo was gone. You can buy re-creations of that particular Bandmaster circuit and speaker configuration today from www.clarkamplification.com or www.victoriaamp.com/

Hope those links come up OK

Robert: If I remember correctly, I sold the amplifier to a Local steel Guitar player on Oahu. I was in the Navy at the time and had been transferred off the island to the USS Princeton LPH-5 (helicopter carrier), and did not have the capability of taking the amp with me. I still think this amp had as good a sound as any Fender amp I ever heard. Maybe it's just the memory. Image PS: I bought it from another sailor who was being transferred. It might still be on the island today.

Yeah - they're great-sounding amps, your memory is correct. A lot of people are looking for those old Bandmasters these days, like most of those tweed Fenders. I hope it is still on the islands - with some beautiful steel guitar floating out of it - entertaining the tourists!
