Headphone amps-What do you like?

Post by Steve Frost »

In the interest of preserving family sanity, I'm looking to buy a headphone amp . I've seen a few in catalogs, online, etc. However ther isn't enough info there to really distinguish one from the next. Opinions?

I use a Peavey ProFex (original, not ProFex II). Good effects processor and it has a headphone jack right on the front with a separate vol control.

Real handy for tuning by ear on stage also. The later ProFex doesn't have the HP jack.

The Pandora PX-3 is a "Personal Effects" unit that is about 4"x5"x1" that is programmable for effects. I think it is an outstanding little device and I use it for just what you are doing. I plug in the guitar to the volume pedal, the volume pedal to the INPUT of the pandora, and plug in earphones to the OUTPUT. It has an internal tuner (Not really the best), a metronome, pre-program rhythm tracks (I don't use them) It can record several seconds of input and play them back in a loop for practice. (Nice but I don't use it) and all the effects.

I use the metronome and I have effects that I have programmed to put a nice, full sound in my ear. I use it every day for practice and love it.

Search in electronics using Pandora, and you will find other discussions about this device.

I have a Radio Shack 3 channel mixer that I sometimes use for practice with headphones.
It is not too good with the steel as there is no EQ and it is thin sounding.
However, it works much better with the Bass, so I practice that while my wife is watching TV.
I wouldn't buy one of these specifically for an instrument. It's just that I had it "in stock" and it was handy to use.

See Bobbe Seymour's web page...go to specials. He sell two types of headphone amps. I have the SignalFlex. Simple to use, runs off a 9v battery and can also be used as a regular headphone if you don't want to use the amp. More power than you'll ever need...sells for about $34.00.

For about $100 you can get a Behringer 6 channel mixer from Musician's Friend. I use mine with a stereo Reverb pedal and a stereo tape deck- 2 separate channels for each, all with EQ. The sound is superb- I can mix things however I like... when I'm "playing with the band at 3AM and my family is sound asleep in the next room(s). Much better sound and far more versitile than any headphone amp I've seen.

I just Purchased a DigiTech RP200. I find it to be Real neat. It has a Jam along input and a headphone jack. The Jam-along allows you to play a tape or Cd Player in With your Steel or guitar also . I noticed after I bought the RP200 that the RP300 has the feature where you can record a lick and slow it down 1/4 speed and it will be in pitch... that I wish I Had.
I used the RP200 on A gig this past sat night. I patched it in the effects loop on My Session 500. I was Like A kid at christmas time if you know what I mean.
Good Luck With What Ever You Decide To use.

A "Pocket Rockit" works great. Available at Guitar Center or any musice store, has effects and a plug in for the line in/CD player. Less than 40 bux.

Thanks for the ideas, gentlemen.I'll take it under advisement. Try to sort out what I need from what I'd like to need.- Steve
