JBL D-130f recone ?

Are recone kits still available for these speakers? The ones I have say 8-16 ohms on them and two of the three look like they have already been reconed with the wrong kit. The third one appears to have been reconed but looks like it was done correctly. I haven't tried them out yet and I don't really have anything to compare them too. All this talk I 've read about D series speakers has me curious. I like vintage tone. I could power these with my 1971 Twin Reverb. Are recone kits for 8 ohm the same price as a 4 ohm kit?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry Dave, they haven't made them for many years. And, most residual stocks are gone, too. You can get it reconed with a generic kit, there are several of them available, and it will sound "pretty much" like it did when it was new, but not exactly. It's unfortunate, but you have to remember....that speaker was designed almost half a century ago!

Thanks guys.I found a place in Orange County CA that will do the job for about 40 to 50 dollars less than the places up here in Northern CA. www.speakerepair.com

To get a D-130f reconed for 4 ohms is about $200. For 8 ohms it is about $165. I see these speakers selling for about $150 on the Forum. I need to think about this.

Zone sent mine to a place in Orange County. It came back sounding like new (to these poor old ears, anyway). Yeah, the price was in the $200 range.

Was it your E-130 for the Webb? That's a good price. Maybe I'll take them to Zone and let them deal with the shipping.

Since the recone kit for the D, K and E speakers is the same, would they sound the same after being reconed? What do you think? I remember the D sounding different from the E.

Hey Dave from my experience in having a D and K and E and originals and recones> here goes.
Of course the D's and K's are the alnico mag. and the E's are ceramic mag. the sound of the E's are more like the sound of the Black Widow(modern synthetic)sound.
Any recone kit done to any JBL speaker today is with a E kit. It will be fine if done by a proper tech that knows how to set the voicing properly.
So eventhough the D; K; and E would be reconed with same kit; the D and K will sound differently than the E, because of the different mag.; but not a huge difference.
Now I have played through a D-130 that was reconed to 4 ohm and sounded awful(must have been done by a incompetant

) compared to my original D-130; but I have also heard a D-130 recone sound fine and passable to my standards; but still not as voiced and clear full range of tone, like my original.
I now have a original K-130 in my twin(8ohm) and my D-130(8ohm) in a extension cab next to the twin. The K now sounds better in my twin than the D did; simply because I believe the voicing is better at the low end for taking those low notes on C6th.
But when both the twin and cab run together at a 4ohm load> it is just killer.
So I would venture to say if getting a recone> recone the D or K by a good guy> "sounds like you may have a good one as posted above". We have a guy here in Austin at "Austin Speakers" that did a recone for a D-130 16ohm to a 8ohm and is dang great> good luck.
Oh and Chris DeBarge sent me a D-130 that was originally a 16 ohm; and was reconed to a 4 ohm; and it sounds KILLER> hey Chris who did that job man???

Thanks Ricky. I have 3 speakers that need reconing. I'm thinking of one at 4 ohms and two at 8 ohms so I have lots of options. I'd like to try running two 8 ohm speakers from the Twin and maybe even my Webb.

Dave, there were different people at Zone back then. I'm sure that you would get a better deal direct with the Orange County company.

Yeah, it was my Webb speaker.

Two 8 ohm JBLs from the Webb doesn't sound all that great. Been there, done that. The amp is designed to run 1 or 2 of those 4 ohm speakers. If you want to borrow my two 8 ohm cabinets for a gig, let me know.[This message was edited by Bobby Lee on 06 June 2001 at 05:56 PM.]

Yeah Dave; like b0b said> the Webb needs to have the 4 ohm in it; then if you want to run whatever extension speaker from it; would even add greatness to already a great amp by itself.
But the twin is great sounding with a 8 ohm speaker in it> you just loose a number on your volume and maybe even two numbers; but sound is still dang good. But then when you run a extension 8ohm speaker from the back; now you have a 4 ohm load and it's killer.
So plop that 4ohm in your Webb> plop an 8 ohm in the Twin; then plop the other 8 ohm in a cabinet; and do the Webb thing and do the Twin thing and you always have a extension cab ready for either one> and your "Good to go" Pal.

Thats what I was thinking Ricky. My concern at this point is finding the best person to do the job. Maybe shopping for price is not the way to go. I'll pay extra to get it done right.
