Peavey ProFex vs, TubeFex
I would appreciate hearing any pro's or cons cocerning buying a TubeFex vs, a ProFex. I would be using this for Pedal steel and guitar.
Thanks,
Lefty

Also consider a Transtube Fex. The Transtube Fex analog preamp is transistors, where the TubeFex has 12AX7 in the analog preamp. The Transtube Fex lists for $200 less than the Tube model.
The Transtube Fex also has a headphone out jack for quiet practicing and it has a stereo in jack for a stereo CD or tape player, to play along with which are not in the TubeFex.

Lefty,
I have a Profex II that I bought used here on the forum and a Transtube fex that I bought new as a back up. Both sound great. The Profex II sounds richer. I've never used the Tubefex. Like Jack mentioned, the transtube fex has the headphones jack which I have plugged into my patch bay in my rack. I play an new Emmons and also a GFI through it. I think that different guitars match up with different effects so it may be just finding the combo that you like best.

Sometimes it's the little things in life that matter and here they are:
TubeFex has a built in tuner (which I can't live without) and a regular 110V AC cord (which eliminates the dreaded wall-wart).
Those are reasons enough, but here's one more:
Analog type knobs right on the panel for easy live adjustment.
Buy the TubeFex if you can.

I have used the Profex II, the Tube Fex, and the Transtube Fex (currently using the Transtube Fex).
I returned my Profex II the same day I bought it becasue it had so much background hiss, and I felt it lacked a certain presence. Others have expressed a similar opinion to me about this unit.
I then used a Tube Fex for 4-1/2 years. It was everything the Profex II was not. In my opinion, it is not even in the same league.
The Transtube Fex has the nice added features the others explained. The best feature I found, is it still kept the overtones of the "real tube" sound, but I will not have to worry about replaing the tubes down the road.
My advice is - Tube Fex or Transtube Fex. Get the best deal you can on either. They will both sound very equal. I think a lot of players don't optimize these units because they use the Jeff Newman settings card that was written for the Profex II, and does not use the tube or tube-modeled pre-amp (the best improvement in the cases). Are there better pre-amp / effects rigs out there... you bet. I just think these units give a lot of "bang for their buck", and they have served me well.
Good luck,
David Spires
