Utah speaker

Post by Bobby Boggs »

I saw an old Fender Vibroverb on E bay. It had a Utah speaker.Has any one ever heard of these? Where they any good?Did Fender offer them? Are is this a speaker someone has added? I asked the owner these ?'s and he had no idea. Sure was a huge speaker.

Bobby,

Through the years, Fender used many different speakers for their amps, with the JBL's and Jensen "Special Design" being the most popular. They may well have used Utahs for a time...I do know they used CTS as well.

Utah had a whole line of musical instrument speakers back in the '60s and '70s called "Cadence". These were good speakers, and quite similar to the Jensens, in design and sound. Their speakers were efficient too, and came with 16, 24 or 32 oz. magnets. (The magnet size, strength, and design contributes a lot to the efficiency and bass response of a speaker.)

These "Cadence" speakers were also quite popular for replacement use, since they were available through both Lafayette, and Allied Radio, two big electronic catalog retailers of that period.

My 1971 Twin has Utahs made for Fender. They have the orange and silver colored sticker on the magnets. DZ

For guitar, I like the Utahs better, but I think the JBLs would work better for pedal steel, from what I hear from other players. The Utahs sounded good with my Fender Custum T-8 but not that good with my shobud. As far as weight, my guess is that a Twin w/JBLs will be heavier.

Alot of old Fenders used Oxford (often called
blue label)speakers & CTS speakers in addition to all those mentioned above.

Utahs were OK (not great) speakers. They were a little less expensive than Jensens in their time. Tim R.
