about to "audition" for a new band.

Post by Bill McCloskey »

Later today I'm "auditioning" for a new band. I was in a Neil Young tribute band but it wasn't a good fit. These new folks play 60's and 70's rock and pop hits. This is now my second band since I took up Pedal steel 3 years ago when I was 68. 71 now. Wish me luck. Always a bit nerve racking playing with folks you've never met.

Good luck, Bill. Remember, you’re auditioning them, too. If they’re good players and know what they’re looking for, they’ll know how to make you sound your best.

I can only imagine.

I've been playing guitar and pedal steel guitar in bands since the early 1970s. That would be a total of 2 bands!

There are only two options as I see it.
Either I'm right, or there is a sinister conspiracy to conceal the fact that I'm right.

Well, I passed the audition. Now I have to decide if I want to play with these folks. They weren't great, but they weren't terrible. But they think they can book 4-8 gigs a month. I have taken that with a grain of salt. 45 minute drive to rehearsal but they live near Dave Grafe so that is convenient. I'll sleep on it.

Good for you, Bill. What downside do you see from accepting the job? From my perspective, a 45 minute drive to practice wouldn't be a deal-breaker. If the band members meet a minimum threshold of talent, are good folks, and can get gigs, it's going to be a good learning experience for you. And it gets you out of your practice room and into the gigging circuit where you'll be able to network and get your name out there. Good luck!

Thanks Tommy. I told them I'll take the gig. If nothing else, it is a great set list and tunes that will be fun to work on. People seem good, and if they can get gigs, so much the better.
