SM 57 for Kick Drum?

Post by George Kimery »

I know I need a large diapram mic like a Shure 52 or an AKG 112, but I don't have either of these mics. I would like to mic the kick drum Friday night for a little extra punch in our sound. Jus wondering if anybody has had much luck with a 57 on kick drum? I also have an AKG D 3800 vocal mic and a couple of Carvin M68's which are similar to the Shure SM 58's.

Sm 57 for kick drum mic?

Post by George Kimery »

John, my sentiments exactly....OK....But.

There will not be any loud stuff, just easy, low volume classic country. The drummer is great, but is not a power drummer out to deafen the world. This is our first time trying to mic the kick, so it will be an experiment. I can hear the punch that I am looking for in my head. I know the 57 is not going to be great on the low end like a 52 or 112, but for now it will have to do.It should handle the SPL without any problem. If the band likes what they hear with the kick miced, then after Christmas, I will be looking into purchasing a large diaphram kick mic, assuming I can find a good used one at a good price.
