Old school stuff here. I have a trunk full of 1/2 inch 8 track tapes on 10 inch reels that were recorded on a Tascam 80-8 machine back in the late 70s and early 80. I found a machine at a local studio that can play them but...the proprietary dbx noise reduction is necessary. My guy had not heard of software for that so I wonder, anyone else run into this dilema?

Bill B,
I had one of these units years ago...even older that the one in the posts the Bill T linked to....
If I remember correctly the DBX was straight 2:1 companding, so you really only need a 2:1 expander to get it right.
At least one of your tapes should have an alignment burst or even a 1K slated tone(s)-see what it has and try a simple expander....I do not think the old DBX units were freq. band specific-as in companding different bands at a different level, but I do believe they did break it into 3 bands.
If you can get the person with the playback machine to record a bit of it into the digital domain I can assist you in figuring it out.
