Anybody using Stewart Pro Reference amp?

Post by Harry Hess »

They make the 1000 model and the 500 model (Pro Reference series).

The guy I'm gonna buy it from advised me to get the 1000 model. Now that I'm almost ready financially to purchase, I'm wondering if my 4 ohm JBL K-130's can handle it.

My dealer says that he doesn't stock the 500 model. He also indicated that he ordered the 1000 for me and doesn't want to get stuck with it.

Traditionally a "reference" amp is used in a studio. I use a Hafler Reference amp in my studio. The standard way of operating them is "wide open", then you set your mixer and preamp levels appropriately.

How do you Stewart users set your volume on the power amp and your preamp?

BTW, I plan to use my older Mesa-Boogie Stereo Tube Preamp in this new stereo rig that I'm putting together. It will also include a Lexicon MPX-1 and a Korg DTR-1 rack mounted tuner.

Thanks for your help.

HH

Harry:

I saw a Stewart power amp the other day on the work bench at Strait Music here in Austin. I was having Bill Ussery help me with my rack rig. Bill's a very competent amp tech who sets up Eric Johnson's stuff. I asked him about the Stewart amp and using it on my PSG rig. His remarks were something to the effect of "save your money." He said parts were hard to get and he didn't like the reliability--he suggested a QSC or some other type power amp. They make a pretty affordable version with about 350 W per side, bridgeable.

Harry.....

Don't hold me to this but,,,, at one of our "Superjam" events I checked out John Hughey's rig.

He was using a Lexicon LPX-5 drivin' a Stewart PA 1000,With 2 15in cabs.

I don't know if this is his regular gig-gear or not but when he started to playing, boy, did it ever sound good.

As for it being a "Reference" Amp used in studios, Well,I use a "Alesis RA 100" with my rack-rig. It performs just as well as anything else I have. (See My Gear at my web-page.
