Fender Tonemaster Twin speakers

Post by Ryan Forster »

wondering if anyone has switched out the stock Jensen speakers in the TM twin for something possibly better suited for PSG? I have a TT12 in another cab but am curious what peoples thoughts are with options or just keeping it the way it is

I have a Tonemaster Twin and tried a different approach. I disconnected the speakers, made a patch cable and tried some other speakers including the TT 12 in another cabinet. I also have 2 old Twin Reverb Tube amps that I patched to. Honestly I didn't feel a great improvement in tone. I tried a couple other cabinets with Peavey Black Widow speakers and came to the same conclusion. There was a post a few years back discussing this with similar results. You may hear it differently but to me the swap wasn't worth it as the stock speakers seem to handle it fine. I will say the best steel tone i got was using a Peavey profex II parametric eq and it's reverb and delay In the 2nd channel of the Tonemaster.

Thanks! Yah that’s helpful, I will try hooking it up to my other cabs first as I have heard the speakers are paired well for the TM so a change may not be needed

About a year after I bought the TM Twin I felt like the sound was losing some upper end bite. I swapped one of the Jensens for a Celestion Copperback 250 and liked the sound much better. When I got a TM Deluxe, I was on the fence at first, so did a similar swap with similar results. In the Deluxe it might even be too bright. Now that I've played the TM Deluxe extensively, I should try swapping back and see what I think. Good project for a rainy afternoon today!

Just a side note. I too have Surfy Bear Compact and prefer it to the onboard reverb, due to its tone, gain, depth, dwell and switchable channels. It never muddies up the quality of the dry signal - just surrounds it with lush, organic reverb. A great piece of gear!

Yah I have tried a few digital reverb pedals but none feel as good as the surfy bear, it’s an awesome unit although not small. I actually get my TM twin this week so am hoping it’s as good as folks say, I definitely want to be done with tube amps for practicality. I have a quilter TB202 I am using currently but not sure I am sold on it for the sound I am looking for which is that old 60s fender vibe. It sounds good I just hope the TM twin sounds better

I have a Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb blonde from which I recently removed that Celestion speaker and installed a 1203-8 Black Widow. The resulting tone is way better for steel. My only wish now is that the output of the amp would be 65 watts like Music Man RD112-65 instead of only 22!

I haven’t had any reason to want to change out the Jensen speakers that are standard.
