Getting rid of the 'clunk' G6 reso with new strings

Please recommend an 8 string reso string set for G6.

I'm finding a lot of sets for lap steel - but they're not wound for acoustic guitar. The set I put on this guitar was a lap steel set and may be the problem.

Your experience would be appreciated.

You may have to construct a set from singles. I use this chart for both acoustic/reso and electric steels. I like John Pearse 80/20 for the wound strings on my Weissenborn.

G6 - low or hi bass?

FWIW

I use D'Addario EJ42 (6 string phos/bronze) and buy additional singles, .030 wound for string 4 and .058 wound for string 8.

Of course you can start with any standard reso set for G tuning and add singles as required.

I don't know that anyone makes a specific G6/8 string set for reso/dobro these days.

I should have suspected that they'd have to be custom made up since I couldn't find a set anywhere for an acoustic 8.

Well...just looked up Just Strings .030 single string - $2.28. I could live with that...

Shipping = $7.95!

I buy (and use) 1 doz. of each gauge. I do change strings frequently.

Might be able to find small quantities at a local shop.

I might have fallen off the turnip truck, but I seriously doubt that a package of strings via USPS costs $10.50.

Next time I'm at Guitar Center I'll pick through the single string drawers.

Least expensive USPS flat rate Priority box is $10.50. Least expensive Priority Mail is now $9.85.

Thank you Howard... your numbers match what I found. My frustration comes from the shipping choices offered by vendors.

A package of coiled strings will easily fit in a padded (or unpadded) envelope that weighs less than an ounce and will ship for a couple postage stamps.

Why would the vendors offer only cartons at very irrational prices? You'll forgive me I hope if I'm skeptical and wonder if there's not a profit stream somewhere in the shipping part of the sale.

FWIW, I found a dozen American made .030 bronze guitar strings on Amazon for $12.79 + $3.49 shipping- $1.35 ea shipped. The online string sellers mentioned in this thread ships one string for $1.90+$7.50 making one string $9.85.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I know when something doesn't feel right.

BTW, I found two single strings to complete a 6 to 8 string set at Guitar Center for $2.40ea.

Vendors & many customers prefer Priority Mail. I know I do. The cheapest rate, even for an envelope is $9.85.

I don't see much of a profit in shipping.

As a former parts vendor, we would never use 3rd class/ "Parcel Post".

Yep, shipping is high now-a-days
But the cost of shipping one string is the same as shipping 10 sets of strings. So I always order strings for a bunch of my guitars at once. Including a few extras to try something new. Unless you live near a store that sells singles, that's how it is.
