Profex question,,Mike Brown or anyone
My ProfexII is almost 7 years old now with the original battery still working. My question is,,,if the battery should give out ,is it true that the unit will still operate but the user pre-sets will be lost ?
Also I was thinking of checking the battery for any leakage,,, could you tell me Approx. where the battery is located.
Thanks in advance to all.

Rick, I have replaced a lot of these! Yes the presets will be lost and the unit typically comes up scrambled after changing the battery. You will need to reinitialize the unit and reload. remeber to save your settings to a card or a midi-filer, if you have one. Remove the six screws that hold the top on, then remove the top. You will see a blue or aqua battery soldered to the board. Look for leakage. Clean with a Q-tip soaked with acetone (fingernail polish remover) or denatured alcohol, if it is leaking. This helps neutralize the acid.

Ken, thank you for your assistance.........as always.
Rick, Ken states the truth. But, if you wish to have the battery replaced, our factory technicians can replace it for you and restore your unit to factory specs. If perhaps the battery has leaked, it will need a thorough cleaning and hopefully no damage did occur to the other components.

Well I checked the battery & it looks great to me. The date on the inside of my Profex said May 1993,, almost 10 years old & still on the original battery WOW!!!
One question though,,,is the battery soldered in with the little clips on the side of the battery or on the baord at the bottom of the little clips???

Hey Rick.....
That sucker is soldered on both sides of the board. The best way to undo it is to take both the top and bottom of the case off. The front and back peices will stay attached to be board. Unsolder the battery by applying the 25 watt soldering iron from the bottom side ONLY. When the solder begins to flow, gentley pull up on the battery. There is 3(three) pins soldered to the board. 2 on one end and 1 pin on the other. The picture above shows the 2 pin end of the battery. Just be careful and you should have no trouble replaceing the battery.
Actually tho, If you are not having problems with the set and/or it's not tellin' you the battery's low, I would not replace it. If you measure the + and - ends of the battery while the Profex II is powered up, it should read approx 4.4 - 4.6 volts. when power is removed from set, the battery should drop no lower than 2.8 volts. Eventho it is said that the battery life is about 3 to 5 years, I have seen industrial equipment that had shelf life of 10 years time and still work very well. This kind of power source is very dependable.
[This message was edited by Bill Crook on 05 June 2002 at 12:48 PM.]
