Emmons single coil hum

Hi Y'all - After installing the Lemay mod kit into my Nasville 400, i am getting a lot of low-end hum out of my '79 emmons s-10 original pickup. Now don't get me wrong, it is not the mod kit or amp cause when i fire up my '39 ric lap steel, it sounds great. Very quiet, NO low end hum. Same settings, cable etc. No gadgets. Not even volume pedal. So, the emmons PU seems to be the problem. Any advice out there or is it pickup time? Thanks

Set your amp at a different angle relative to the pickup, it could be that the transformer in your amp is lined up with the coils in your pickup which will cause the symptoms you describe.

Bud, The hum has probably always been there,
you are hearing it now because the Mod extends the bass response of the NV400.
Jim advice is good....change the angle or put more distance between the guitar and the Amplifier.

Thanks fellas - but moving the guitar around does'nt change anything. The low hum is loud and strong and unwavering with movment of the guitars proximity to the amp. How's about changing pick-up height.

Proximity to a computer monitor or other devices which radiate magnetic fields and RF are an often overlooked source of noise - so make sure it's not that.

Mike - No thats not it either. Nothing in the room, no 60cycle hum. Just a little battery powered pumpkin that says Happy Halloween every time ther's a loud noise.

Try a different guitar cord. Also check the output jack on the guitar and the underneath wiring.

I suspect the cause is what Blake said, increased low end (bass) response on the Amp. The Lemay mod changes the value of a coupling capacitor and the result is a relatively large increase in low end. Any (pickup) "hum" would be more apparent after the mod.

The Peavey factory mod does not change that capacitor.

I've tried it both ways and like it better without the cap value change that increases the low end. It sounds too "boomy" to me. Blake's Nashville 400 has that capacitor changed to the Lemay mod kit value and I've compared his amp to my Peavey factory modified Nashville 400 and prefer mine.

You might try pulling the pickup and either foiling under the bottom of the pickup or in the pickup cavity and connecting it to ground. That can cure 80% of noise.
On Rick's the ground wire from the pickup is attached to the pickup assembly plate (if I recall correctly) so that shields the coil but Emmons dont have any shielding at least on the pickup. They are also very loosley wound with no potting which could cause a low end rumble sound but not an electrical type of noise.
