Graphic EQ With Steel?

Post by Lee Baucum »

Are any of you guys and gals using an EQ with your steel? I added a dual channel, 15-band graphic EQ to my little rack. When using two amps, it's nice to be able to adjust the volumes of each amp independently, using the volume controls on the EQ. It's also good for tweaking the tone of each amp.

Right now, I've got the two channels hooked up in series with each other, to use when playing through one amp only. The idea is to be able to have three distinct tones on stage - 1. No EQ 2. EQ Channel 1 3. EQ Channel 2. I guess a fourth tone could be achieved with both channels kicked in.

Anybody have any favorite settings for their EQ?

I use two Nashville 400's with a two channel EQ. I run the output of my processor to both EQ's and then one EQ to each amp.works great.

How are you setting your EQ's?

First off I connect everything in the following manner:
1) Volume pedal to the first amp input.
2) Patch out -- match-bro -- processor-- EQ
3) Channel 1 of EQ -- to first amp patch in.
4) Channel 2 of EQ -- to second amp patch in.

I set EQ's as follows:
Freq. setting (in db)
31.5 -12
40 +3
63 +5
100 +5
160 +3
250 0
400 -3
500 +3
630 +5
800 +6
1k +6
2k +3
4k +3
8k -3
16k -12

I forgot to mention that EQ's are not really tone controls, but are used to shape the sound for the room you are playing. They need to be tweaked from time to time. They will not sound the same from club to club.

Well.....actually, Curt...the EQ's are a tone control! And, a good graphic EQ will let you get tones from your amp you never dreamed of. I have one amp, an old Super Twin-Reverb, that has an active graphic equalizer built-in. The difference between that amp...and an amp (any single-unit amp) without a graphic EQ is nothing short of phenomenal!

I am amazed that manufacturers today don't include a 7 or 8 band graphic EQ in their upscale amps. They're that impressive when it comes to "tailoring sound"...which is all any tone control does.

I used to use a graphic EQ, but nowadays it seems that I can always get a tone I like out of any rig I plug into. To get tonal variety, I switch pickups! Ahh, a Sierra!

I use a simple foot pedal graphic (Boss GE7) when the going gets tough.

I prefer using gyrators myself. I love "scooping" out certain freqs!

I like the Peavey TransTube Fex, it has all the EQ's you will ever need and more too. In my opinion the TTFex is the best effect investment a steeler can make. Sounds great playing direct to the board via the Low Z stereo out's too. I can hardly wait till Peavey hits the streets with a new version of the TTfex.
As an afterthought, i just purchased a Peavey Bandit TransTube 112 amp with extension speaker cab for my Tele work. I am really impressed with this little amp (the twin stays home now). It sounds good with steel and would suffice for low volume gigs. I have it connected stereo with my nash400 and ttfex, sounds great.
